Chihuahuas can be a good companion breed. They are brave, proud, and adventurous. They love to be petted and given affection. They are strong-willed but can be trained. Like most dogs, they are loyal and can become attached to their owners very quickly. If you do decide to train them, they are fast learners. One problem with Chihuahuas is sometimes they may be difficult to housebreak.

Do not let them do things you wouldn’t approve of other dogs doing, like jumping on humans – they can develop small dog syndrome from this. They respond to firm but patient scolding for misbehaving. If you allow this little dog to be your pack leader it will develop many behavior issues such as jealousy, aggression with other dogs and sometimes with humans, and will become undeniably suspicious of people except for its master. With strangers around, it will follow its owner’s every step, keeping as close to them as possible.

Chihuahuas, like other toy breeds, can suffer from a number of medical issues. Notable are epilepsy and diabetes. Hypoglycemia is relatively common. Chihuahuas do not take to the cold well and may require a small sweater in cold weather, otherwise, they will shiver and seek warmth constantly.

Overall, Chihuahuas are good, loving dogs, and make excellent companions.
