Although the Havanese is a toy dog, it is stronger than it looks. It can have a very shaggy coat, which is designed to keep it cool in tropical weather, but can get an ‘oily’ look if not cared for, and it is also possible for them to appear too frizzy if the coat gets too dry. Brushing out the coat twice a week is essential, as it gets tangled easily, and infrequent brushing will result in constant shedding. The coat is essential to a Havanese’s health, as it is a tropical breed and can get cold in winter.
Relatively smart, the Havanese can be trained – preferably while young but they will still respond to training at an older age. Like some other toy breeds, the Havanese can be tough to housebreak, so get that done early.
The breed has a great temperament and will be very social. Some Havanese can become independent, some can be shy, but overall they show loving affection for their family and will be happy if their owner is happy. Because of their cheerful nature, they are often used as therapy dogs.
The Havanese is a strong breed but can fall foul to liver disease, heart disease, and luxating patella.
