Shibas are alert, confident, courageous, bold, compassionate, kind, and brave. Shiba Inus are known for being particularly clean dogs and often try to avoid puddles on the ground. They do not bark very often and show lots of love and care to their owners. They are very playful, and get along great with children and other dogs. It’s recommended to be social with them early as puppies, as they can be reserved to strangers they do not know.

If the Shiba doesn’t think the owner is a good enough leader, it can make up its own rules, so proper human to canine communication is essential.

They are natural hunters, so they shouldn’t be trusted or left alone with small animals such as cats, birds, or mice. Keep an eye on your Shiba at all times, especially during walks, as they like to chase and run. If you prove to the Shiba you are a good pack leader, they will not misbehave. They only misbehave if you are not strict when you need to be, and by being strict this shows that you are a good leader and they will likely obey you more. Overall they are a good breed choice for a family pet, and they are low maintenance.
