The Weimaraner breed of dog is several centuries old and is from the same blood as the Bloodhound, a stock of German hunting breeds. When the breed was first discovered it was used as a big game hunting dog, hunting for bears, deer, and wolves, but as time went by and this sport became less popular people started using the Weimaraner for smaller game such as chickens and rabbits. In recent times, it is more commonly used as a bird dog or water retriever.

Physically the Weimaraner is a large dog, hardworking and athletic. Traditionally the tail is docked. The docked tail should be about 6 inches in adult dogs. It has a short coat, which is very low on maintenance. This breed has no undercoat, so it should not be exposed to extreme cold.

The Weimaraner is a happy, intelligent, cheerful, loving, and affectionate dog. It is good around kids, but if it is not properly exercised then it can be difficult to control and can become aggressive. It requires daily exercise, and if not offered fun it will make up its own games – such as ripping up furniture. It is a quick learner. It has a strong instinct to hunt, and therefore cannot be trusted with small animals like rabbits and chickens.
