Crazy weather here today – counted at least 10 lightening strikes within the last half an hour, and absolutely pelting down.
Got me thinking how glad I am that thunder doesn’t bother Rocky!
Just wondering if most dogs are ok with thunder, or if most are scared of it?
My dog ( a 12-year-old poodle) has been scared of thunders almost all his life-ever since some kid threw a fire cracker just a couple of feet away from him. He always goes under the sofa..
My dog is about 8 years old and he is terrified of thunders . He’ll start shaking and hides under the bed or jumps in my lap.
My dog is also afraid of thunder. So much that she now associates rain with thunder and is afraid of rain. I’ve tried the ThunderShirt with no help. Mostly I have to sit with her and hold her while she shakes and drools. I feel so bad for her.
When I was younger my best friend had a dog that was terrified of thunder and other loud noises. 4th of July would be the worst. I remember they always had to bring him inside and calm him down at night. I guess dog’s ears are more sensitive.
My dog is 6 years old and a little dachshund. She is without fear during a thunderstorm, but sometimes she starts barking. I think she thought it was another barking dog and answered him. The same happens with fireworks.
My little 7 year old corgi is terrified of thunder, too. She doesn’t like to be held during it, though, so I have a feeling the thunder jacket won’t help. She just goes to one of her hiding places and ducks down until its over. But she’s the only dog I’ve ever had who is afraid of it.
My dog is afraid of any loud noises. Thunder bothers her but definitely not as much as fireworks or gun shots. She was a complete wreck last fourth of July. 🙁 As long as she is close to me she seems to calm down easily though.
Fear of thunder and other loud noises is common with many dogs. Thunder shirts are one option; there are also quite a few natural / homeopathic options as well: Pet Calm from Richard’s Organics, Ark Natural’s “Happy Traveler” and Homeopet has several options)
I’m hoping my older dog’s fears aren’t going to be taught to the younger one. So far, he seems to not be as fearful, but he also seems to worry about the older dog when she is being afraid.
When it is something more predictable (like 4th of July fireworks), I try to make sure my dogs are worn out during the day (play time, long walks, etc) and then give them something to keep them busy evening time (raw marrow bone, kongs filled with treats, etc)
My mother-in-law owns a Toy poodle/lhasa apso mix and a Chihuahua/jack russel mix, and both little babies are terrified of thunder! We had a thunder/wind storm just a few days ago and our animals were all scared, too. But for her small dogs, they huddle close to her in bed or tend to curl up in a ball and kind of ‘hide’. 🙁
