I’ve used food as a method of positive reinforcement but I’ve never used a clicker before. What are some techniques and situations that you can use a clicker for? Is it a better method than using food?

clicker is definitely a better method. I have  accustomed my dog to the food and now without it refuses to do anything.  However, if you offered her food she will do everything you want 🙂 . So you better go get used to the clicker rather than the food. I’m too late for that 🙂  enjoy

Also, using the clicker is a better way to mold the behavior that you want from your dog. The dog learns that the clicker marks the wanted behavior. So, when the dog performs the wanted behavior the clicker can quickly mark the good behavior much faster than a food treat would. I hope this makes sense.

Example: Training my dog to “stick em up”. I can lure the dog into sitting pretty and then try to get him to put up his paws. The moment he puts up both his paws I click, then treat. He has learned that what he was doing at the moment of the click is the wanted behavior. This is a more precise way of training. If I had given him a treat after he put up his paws, he very well could have put his paws down right before the treat, and the wanted behavior would not have been as clearly marked.
