The Border Collie is very smart and aware of its surroundings. It is able to be taught tricks and trained to an excellent level. They are hardworking dogs, and thrive to be praised for doing well. These dogs are sometimes used in competitive sports because they show great agility skills, obedience, herding abilities, and are good at retrieval. When used in these sports, they often excel. For people who wish to do these competitive sports with a dog, the Border Collie is an excellent choice. Farmers also enjoy the companionship of Border Collies because they work well with herding animals.

The Border Collie is highly energetic, and can run and play all day long, provided they get plenty of activity to keep them occupied. Border Collies will get along quite well with other dogs and small kids, but they may be aggressive with other dogs of the same sex if you are not showing strong leadership with them. They should not be trusted with smaller dogs, but they often get along well with cats.

They are not recommended for apartment life, as they are energetic and prefer to live outside on large acres of land. They will do fine in a kennel, as long as they have plenty of exercise.
