So we’ve finally got Oliver trained to go outside on a leash and I’ve noticed something:
He likes too much on grass. A lot. And he prefers dry, brown grass to fresh green stuff. Is this something I should be worried about?
Don’t worry about that
Well Jackie, that’s a concern a lot of pet owners seem to have, but I assure you it’s just fine. In fact, I will be publishing an article here soon that addresses that very concern.
A commonly accepted truism about dogs is that they eat grass when they are sick. Not true! Turns out that grass is probably a natural part of a dog’s diet because their ascendents, wolves, typically ate ALL of their prey, including the stomach contents which often consisted of grass, vegetation and various other odds and ends.
No, it’s nothing to be concerned about at all! It helps with digestion often and natural urges to chew. I actually have begun purchasing pet grass (which is really just organic wheat grass) and keeping it easily accessible for my kitties. One of the two has a bad tendencies to nom on wires, small strings, garments with small strings– really, I could go on. Since introducing the grass, she leaves all of those things like internet cords and phone chargers alone, and is quite happy munching on her green or brownish (depending on how vigilant I’ve been with watering) grass. The only reason I would be worried about allowing your pet to do this outside is because of pesticides. If you or your neighbors spritz your grass with chemical growers, etc, that could be a problem.
That shouldnt be a problem! But like R.W. said, keep an eye open for other things that might be harmfull 🙂
